Today I have another Colourpop vs. ___ comparison, this time swatching, reviewing, and comparing the Colourpop Ultra Blotted Lips in Doozy, Party Wave, Slide, and Zuma vs. Stila Stay All Day Sheer Liquid Lipsticks in Sheer Ballerina. These are both liquid lipsticks touting a sheerer/lighter coverage finish in contrast to the typically opaque finish to liquid lipsticks.
From top to bottom: Colourpop Doozy, Party Wave, Slide, Zuma, and Stila Sheer Ballerina
If you're wondering what the difference between a liquid lipstick and a lip stain are, here's a quick comparison
- Lip Stain: Usually water-based, "staining" or coloring your lips, lightweight, translucent
- Liquid Lipstick: Usually hydrocarbon based (like isododecane), adds a layer onto your lips instead of coloring it, not intended to stain your lips (though some can stain it another color due to the pigments used)
I'm not usually a fan of lip stains because the water-based formula can be drying and I don't like having to try to scrub off the stain at the end of the day. I like the idea behind a sheer liquid lipstick, having the longevity without it looking so heavy like a typical liquid lipstick.
Price/Sizing Comparison
The Colourpop Ultra Blotted Lips are 3 grams/0.10 oz for $6.00. You can only get this on Colourpop. The Stila Stay All Day Sheer Liquid Lipsticks are 3 mL/0.10 oz for $22.00. You can get this at Stila and ULTA's websites.
Color Range Comparison
There are eight colors in the Ultra Blotted Lips range while there are six colors in the Stay All Day Sheer Liquid Lipstick range.
Packaging Comparison
Both lip products are packaged in a clear tube. Colourpop's tube has silver accents and Stila's has gold accents. I've noticed that the holographic printing on the Colourpop tubes have a tendency to wear/off flake away but each color is labeled on the bottom.
Formula Comparison
Colourpop:
- A medium coverage matte lipstick that creates a soft, diffused look. It is completely transfer-proof and long-wearing but also lightweight and comfortable. No cracking or flaking! Leaves lips smooth and fresh.
- Stila’s iconic Stay All Day® Liquid Lipstick goes sheer! It’s your bare necessity, NEW Stay All Day® Sheer Liquid Lipstick has the same all day staying power as the original, but now with softer, sheerer coverage. Lips are tinted with a light wash of color for a natural, softer appearance. Long-wear, sheer formula stays put for up to 12 hours. Won’t bleed or transfer. Enriched with lip nourishing Vitamin E and Avocado Oil.
Stila also describes the formulas as having a softer, sheerer coverage. I only have Sheer Ballerina so I'm describing my experience based off that particular shade. I'm not quite as fond of this shade because it's thin but slightly milky so I feel like I have to be more careful applying this to make sure it doesn't look patchy/uneven. This isn't quite as lightweight as the Ultra Blotted Lips, I do feel it a little more and it's got a matte but not powdery finish. There's this sweet/floral scent that I can smell for a few minutes after it's dried.
Good wear time for Ultra Blotted Lips is about 5-6 hours, afterwards I think it's worth removing and reapplying. I have tried applying a second layer over the old lipstick but I think it looks patchy. Good wear time for the Stay All Day Sheer Liquid Lipstick is also about five hours but again, it looks quite milky.

Conclusion
Others may disagree but I think the smell of a product (especially a lip product) can make it or break it and I really don't like the smell of the Stila Stay All Day Sheer Liquid Lipsticks. I much prefer the Colourpop Ultra Blotted Lips because they have a great finish, feel comfortable, and are very inexpensive with no scent. Stila's Sheer Ballerina being kind of milky means that it runs the risk of looking patchy/uneven on the lips.
If you're thinking of a sheer liquid lipstick, I would recommend the Colourpop Ultra Blotted Lips over the Stila Stay All Day Sheer Lipsticks. The Ultra Blotted Lips feel comfortable and it's hard to beat the price, $6.00 vs. $22.00. You can get three of the Ultra Blotted Lips for less than the price of one Stay All Day Sheer Liquid Lipsticks. The Ultra Blotted Lips are a dupe for the Stila Stay All Day Sheer Liquid Lipsticks with a much superior formula!
I hope you enjoyed this comparison post between the Colourpop Ultra Blotted Lip and the Stila Sheer Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick.
Do you like the idea of a sheer liquid lipstick?

I have become a ColourPop junkie. The blotted textures are divine. And for the price, especially when they have sales, trumps a lot of those more expensive brands.
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed at how many of the ColourPop shades you picked were 'my lips but better' colors. I didn't feel that way with the Stila shade.
Again, I loved this post. You are so thorough. Have a great day!!!
Really interesting. I hadn't heard of the colourpop one, which is kind of surprising. I'll have to check these out.
ReplyDeleteI live in U.K, here colourpop lipsticks are a little expensive rather than U.S.A, that's why I never bought them. My sister lives there. Recently, I did my Spring makeup lesson , hearing this she sent me many of this brand's lipstick. I really love there formula, they are very pigmented and long lasting. Even they have huge color range and for all skin tone. I really love them a lot and will highly recommend them!<3
