Hey everyone!

Today I have a review of the Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Mean Money/Hu$tla Baby.  I don't think anyone in the beauty community missed out on hearing about Fenty Beauty/Rihanna's makeup line and I wanted to make sure I didn't miss out. Given Rihanna's penchant for color, I was rather interested in seeing how inclusive their foundation was and how there was such a variety of highlighters to fit so many skin tones.

I went back and forth between the highlighters; I swatched a few of the duos and the single Metal Moon before I decided on Mean Money/Hu$tla Baby.

The Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters retail for $34.00 for 0.24 oz/7 grams of product. This is only available at Fenty Beauty and Sephora.

The highlighters come in singles and duos, I got the duo in Mean Money/Hu$tla Baby; Mean Money is described as a "soft champagne sheen" while He$tla Baby is described as a "supercharged peachy champagne shimmer"

The highlighter duo comes in a white/purple duochrome octagonal compact. I didn't realize how duochromatic the compact was until I saw it in direct sunlight. I will say given the fact that the Match Stix in the line are magnetic, I'm a little disappointed that the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighters don't have a magnetic closure. The closure has a clasp which is admittedly a little difficult to open at first.

Fenty Beauty says:
  • "Weightless, longwear cream-powder hybrid highlighters that range from subtle dayglow to insanely supercharged in solos and expertly paired duos...With a dose of skin-glorifying color, Killawatt ranges from subtle dayglow to insanely supercharged with shades that were designed for all skin tones. Unlike your everyday highlighter, Killawatt keeps skin lit beyond sundown with its weightless longwear formula — a cream-powder hybrid that instantly melts into skin and blends with almost zero effort. Another win: It’s loaded with superfine shimmer for an ultra-smooth, creamy texture"

Review

The highlighter is a cream-powder formula that allows for subtle to intense glow, it kind of reminds me of a drier version of the Colourpop eyeshadows. With this duo, Mean Money is the subtle shade while Hu$tla Baby is the more intense shade. I noticed that Mean Money felt a little creamier while Hu$tla Baby felt a little drier (in comparison, it's not actually dry), which I attribute to the increased shimmer. You could easily apply this with your fingers or a brush, I prefer the Real Techniques Setting Brush for this particular highlighter.

Mean Money is when you want a more friendly and less intimidating highlight look, it has shine without making your skin look like it's wet. It is buildable so you can increase the impact of its shine. Hu$tla Baby is when you want that "in your face catching the light" glow from the start. I tend to be very strategic when it comes to applying highlighter to reduce emphasizing my pores but this can do that if you're not careful.

Wear time is as described, I was able to get 8+ hours of wear without any primer. It looks just beautiful throughout the day.

The duos will be best suited to people who like versatility and want to be able to create a range of highlighter looks. If you're someone who just prefers a subtle look or an intense look, then half of the duo isn't going to be very useful to you. I like Mean Money if I wanted to wear this throughout the day, Hu$tla Baby is what I like for a nighttime look or when I need to look super highlighted.

Swatches

The highlighters were swatched in direct sunlight. The left set is Mean Money swatched heavily then lightly, and the right set is Hu$tla Baby swatched heavily then lightly.

Conclusion

I am pleased with this highlighter and do love the ability to have different highlighting effects on my skin. The cream-powder hybrid formula works well with a brush for me and adds a nice sheen to my skin. I'm especially pleased with how long it manages to last on my skin. Like I said above, if you're someone who only prefers one type of highlighter look on your skin, you might want to skip the duos and consider possibly the single highlighter in Metal Moon. Trophy Wife is the gorgeous gold glitter but it's a little too gold for my taste.

Have you tried anything from Fenty Beauty?

  1. I love cream to powder formulas of everything! I like the highlighter duo shades you got. I went to Sephora a couple of times to check out Fenty but I haven't bought anything yet. First time, I couldn't find a good match in foundation. Second time, they were out of the one potential foundation match and they took away the tester! I did find a good color match in a concealer stick but it was too sheer and didn't cover my discoloration. Oh well, I'll keep trying to find something.

  3. I think this is a great inclusive shade. I'm sure it looks great on darker complexions. I don't know if I'm going to purchase anything from the line but I'm sure I'll be persuaded one of these days.

  5. I haven't tried Fenty yet (probably the last person on earth LOL). These look so pretty and would look great on yellow/olive tones!

  7. Beautiful duo! Although this might be a bit too much shimmer for my preference (the right side), I like just looking at these swatches :)
