Hey everyone! Today's review is on the Essence Sheer and Shine Lipsticks. For someone looking for an everyday relaxed makeup look, these are promising a sheer lip with a bit of shine for only $2.99. I'm glad to see Essence expanding their makeup line and these were a surprising welcome. They have started launching in Target stores but are they worth the scope?

Where to Purchase: Ulta.com*/Ulta, Target.com/Select Target stores
Price: $2.99 for 3.5 grams/0.12oz
Do they test on animals?: The company does not test on animals.
Packaging: The lipstick comes in a silver tube with a tinted lid. The lid color actually corresponds to each lipstick shade so it's easy to find if you have a few colors.
Formula:
Essence says: "This smooth and lightweight lipstick provides a moisturizing wash of color and shine. Buildable color with every swipe"
The lipstick is exactly as described, it's sheer and adds a bit of shine to your lips. It's not long wearing but very comfortable to wear and not sticky in the slightest. This gives more pigmentation than a tinted lip balm but not as much as a regular lipstick. I also find it lightly hydrating. Application is also very forgiving because the sheerness means you can apply the lipstick without a mirror if you needed to. BFF is the most buildable whereas Glamour Queen doesn't build up that much beyond two swipes. The formula smells slightly of vanilla.
Wear Time:
The lipstick wore for three hours after which the color needed reapplying.
Swatches:
All swatches done in indirect natural daylight. I applied one swipe of each color, though you can certainly build up a heavier layer of both shades.
BFF
Glamour Queen looks like a deep plummy brown in the tube but it applies as a sheer plum with a bit of shimmer. I was worried that the shimmer would make it look icy but it adds a softness that makes it an everyday color.
Conclusion:
I know it doesn't seem particularly exciting, but the formula is exactly as described. It is sheer, provides a bit of shine, and adds a little bit of hydration. It will last for a few hours but can be easily reapplied and you don't even need a mirror. For $2.99, I think it's so worth a try if you're in your local Ulta or at a Target that stocks Essence. I don't think you can beat the price. I do plan on purchasing more to try out since they're so easy to wear and I love the look that it gives.
Are you down for the sheer lipstick look, especially as Spring is on the horizon?

BFF
BFF is a medium toned raspberry pink. Like I said, I applied one layer in the swatch but you can definitely apply several layers for a more intense look but it will still look translucent. The color reminds me of the effect you might get after eating a popsicle but more even and sheer. It's great to wear and is a nice pop of color.
